Our Story

Threads of heritage. Stories woven in colour.

The Founder's Journey

Travel Story Collectives was born from a deep conviction: that every textile carries a story worth telling. Shanmuga Priya, founder of Saree Story and the Azhagi Works sub-brand, set out not merely to sell sarees — but to build a bridge between the hands that create and the hearts that wear.

Her journey took her to the dusty lanes of Srikalahasti, Andhra Pradesh, where she encountered master Kalamkari artists whose families have practised this craft for generations. What she found was not just art — it was a living, breathing civilisation encoded in natural dye and hand-drawn line.

A Craft 3,000 Years in the Making

Kalamkari — literally "pen work" — is a UNESCO-recognised art form with roots stretching back over three millennia. Practised in the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh, it transforms plain fabric into narrative tapestries of mythology, nature, and devotion.

Each Azhagi Works piece passes through a meticulous 23-step hand-painting process: from mordanting and sun-drying to the careful application of natural dyes derived from myrobalan (haritaki), indigo, and pomegranate rind. No two pieces are identical. Every brushstroke is a conversation between the artist and centuries of tradition.

Partnering with Generational Artisan Families

Azhagi Works works directly with generational Kalamkari families in rural Andhra Pradesh — bypassing middlemen to ensure fair, transparent compensation. These are not factory workers; they are custodians of a living heritage, and we treat them as creative partners.

By choosing an Azhagi Works piece, you are not just acquiring a saree or dupatta — you are sustaining a family's livelihood, honouring a lineage of skill, and keeping an ancient art form alive for the next generation.

Our Sustainability & Welfare Commitment

We believe commerce must be conscious. That is why 15% of every Azhagi Works sale is channelled directly into artisan welfare initiatives — covering healthcare access, children's education support, and skill development for the next generation of Kalamkari artists.

Our eco-conscious process uses only plant-based natural dyes — no synthetic chemicals, no harmful effluents. The result is textiles that are as kind to the earth as they are beautiful to wear.
