Description

Step into timeless elegance with the Saree Story with Shanmuga Priya & Azhagi – a stunning Kalamkari Handprinted Fabric that blends centuries-old Indian artistry with contemporary grace. Each drape tells a story, meticulously handcrafted using traditional Kalamkari techniques, where every motif is drawn with a bamboo pen (kalam) and dyed with natural pigments. This exquisite fabric features intricate mythological scenes, floral vines, and peacock motifs, rendered in earthy indigo, madder red, and soft mustard hues – a tribute to South India’s rich textile heritage.

Perfect for weddings, festivals, or cultural soirées, this handprinted cotton fabric drapes with fluid grace and offers breathable comfort, making it a must-have in every conscious fashion lover’s wardrobe. Designed in collaboration with master artisans from Srikalahasti, this piece supports sustainable craftsmanship and slow fashion.

A Legacy of Craftsmanship

The art of Kalamkari dates back over 3,000 years, flourishing under the patronage of the Vijayanagara Empire and later nurtured in the temple towns of Andhra Pradesh. The word Kalamkari comes from Persian – “kalam” (pen) and “kari” (work) – reflecting the meticulous hand-drawing process unique to this craft.

Each Saree Story piece is created by Shanmuga Priya & Azhagi, a visionary duo committed to preserving India’s textile legacy. Their designs honor traditional narratives from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranic lore, transformed into wearable art by skilled artisans. The process involves 17+ steps – from hand-block drawing and natural dyeing with pomegranate, myrobalan, and iron acetate, to sun-drying and final washes. This handprinted Kalamkari fabric is not just clothing – it’s a living heirloom of Indian storytelling and craftsmanship.

Craft

All of Ajrakh's ingredients are made from nature, including herbs, botanical essences, and natural minerals. Some of the common ingredients are wild indigo, pomegranate bark and seeds, and hardwoods. Camel dungs, which are abundant in the region, are used as a material to remove starch from the dough. In ancient times, Ajrakh was printed on both sides. The herders who traditionally wore Ajrakh left home before sunrise and could not distinguish the right side from the other side in the dark because there was no electricity at that time. That's why Ajrakh was printed in both sides.
